Amber Kagan

I’m looking and I’m dreaming for the first time
I’m inside and I’m outside at the same time
And everything is real
Do I like the way I feel?
When the world crashes in into my living room
Television man made me what I am

Background details:

Allies:

  • Father: Justin Kagan, a well-known comedic actor who is currently married to her stepmother, who is two years older than Amber.
  • Mother: Reina Sastre, a high-powered television producer, who is currently married to a movie and TV financier (“angel”).
  • Virtual Adept mage:
  • Cult of Ecstasy mage:

Avatar:

Her Avatar is a modern Astarte, a personification of Media-as-goddess. If you’ve read American Gods, that’s the basic idea, only this goddess is not malevolent, but more neutral. Amber was trained somewhat by a Virtual Adept/Ecstatic pair who drew on her love of pop culture and helped her find the Goddess within it.

Cult:

She has a group of avid (some might say ‘rabid’) followers who have built a New Media Coven based on the concept of Fact and Media as godforms. They occasionally serve as ritual aides for her when she works an extended spell.

Fame:

For her YT channel and her books.

Retainers:

She has a personal assistant, Rafaela Gutierrez, who helps her with the tedious shit. Rafaela (Rafi) manages most of Amber’s fan email and timed posts, and also does a lot of the gofer work that Amber can’t be bothered with. She is a relative of a friend of a friend of Amber’s mother, in her 20s, and has aspirations toward becoming an influencer herself. There may wind up being tension in the future over her time being largely taken up by this job, because Amber is pretty much a rich girl who hates doing the ‘boring shit’ in life.

Paradigm:

The Medium is the Message.
also
The God(s) in the Machine.

Amber’s paradigm revolves around a classic oppositional duality, much like Wicca; she started as a witch, but eventually drifted to something a bit different in focus, where the duality is not God and Goddess, but Fact and Media.

She sees a world with two types of truth — the sort we know, and the sort we experience through media of all sorts. The transcendence of a well-staged play, a well-written book, well-performed music, or a well-produced movie are real and undeniable, and they hold a different sort of truth than actual fact does. She argues that their truth, the emotional and resonant truth, is one of the founding blocks of any society, and that every age has had its own version, whether it was minstrels, neighborly gossip, cave paintings, or what-have-you.

She sees our age as having the potential to bring on a new human Renaissance of progress, if only we learn to use the tools correctly.

Practice:

  • Witchcraft
  • Reality hacking (of a sort)

Rotes

Total Points: 64, Spent: 20

Face Made for Video (Mind 2, Forces 2)

With this rote, Amber can always look her best while on camera by crafting an aura of ‘cool’ and an illusion of near-perfection. She uses custom filters on her cameras to invoke this rote.

Hot Topics (Entropy 2, Time 2)

Amber uses this rote to choose the best topics to discuss on her channel for the sake of viewership, engagement, and the like. Successes can be directed to pinpointing accuracy or coming up with multiple ideas.

I Got It Here Somewhere (Corr 2, Entropy 2)

With this rote, Amber can reach into a container (purse, glove compartment, car trunk) and draw out a ‘concealed’ object that wasn’t there before, as if it had been there all along. The addition of Entropy allows this rote to be coincidental. The object withdrawn must be of a size and shape that could have been concealed within the container — no drawing anvils out of a change purse.

the Message (Mind 2)

This rote can be used to get an idea of what kind of messages or commentary someone might be receptive to hearing from Amber. Successes are largely used to influence accuracy, or garner multiple ideas.

Minor Illusions (Forces 3)

With this rote, Amber can create perfect video illusions including motion, image, and sound that look real to all senses. If she wants this to be coincidental, using a device such as a phone or a tablet to generate them with a TikTok or YouTube border around the image allows this to be completely coincidental.

Telling Fortunes (Entropy 1, Time 2)

With this rote, Amber can peer into the future and past to get a picture of the likely outcomes of current events. It’s just your basic fortune-telling.

Other details

  • Amber currently lives in a midcentury-modern style beach house that is technically owned by her mother, in Santa Monica. There is a small underwater node nearby with its own source of Arcane 5, which Amber protects and tends with occasional aid from the other mages who helped train her.
  • Her money comes from both parents, or did at first; she’s finally making a living of her own with YouTube, but she’s very much a trust fund baby who spent a lot of time in school. She doesn’t have to work, but she does because she believes the message is important.
  • Amber’s “cult” is a group of YouTube viewers who have founded a coven based on her YouTube discussions of conceptual witchcraft and the ideas of media versus truth in her books.
  • Amber has written three books:
    • The Medium, the Message: A work about the role of media in modern society, and how it relates to objective fact.
    • Truth Through Art: This book builds on the first one, and tackles the specific sorts of truth presented in pop culture and modern arts of all sorts.
    • The Feminine in Media: This work is a more directly spiritual one, addressing how the role of the goddess in the pagan duality can be fulfilled by popular culture, and where American society goes wrong in discussing the role of women in society.
  • Car: Amber drives a leased Lexus SUV.
  • Musical tastes: She listens to a little of everything as someone who appreciates the value of music as a huge part of culture.
