House Rules: Adversarial Backgrounds

NOTE: This house rule allows a previously Mage-only rule to be accessed by other game systems!

Any flaw in Mage 20th edition that previously existed as an Adversarial Background in Mage Revised will not count toward your Flaw maximum, but will award points back. Those points must go to Backgrounds. They should be listed as Backgrounds with a negative value.

Adversarial Backgrounds can also be used by other game systems where appropriate.

These flaws are:

All Systems:

  • Apprentice
  • Blacklisted
  • Debts
  • Enemies
  • Gremlin (A creature of some sort doesn’t like you. Can be a chimera, a spirit, a robot, whatever.)
  • Infamy
  • Jinx (Can apply to a Wonder, a Treasure, or a Fetish with a flaw that drives you nuts.)
  • Notoriety
  • Rival House (can apply to any rivalry with another chantry/freehold/caern/court.)
  • Throwback (can apply to any system where Past Life is used.)
  • Ward

Mage only:

  • Skeptics
  • Uncanny

In other words: just use the Adversarial Backgrounds how they were used in Revised.
