Many of us are going to wind up with characters who are from more than one splat, mostly by taking the Kinain or Kinfolk Merits on a full-splat character like a Mage or a Shifter. The appeal of this is to have a broader and potentially more involved character, but there are also limitations.
By ‘Full splat’ I mean the creatures who are in the title of the game line, or similar ones. Mage, Shifter, Changeling, Vampire, Wraith. By ‘support splat’ I mean the subsidiary game books in each like, like Ghouls, Kinfolk, Kinain, Mediums, Sorcerers, and Psychics.
- Unless there is a mechanic in a book somewhere that says otherwise, any given character belonging to a full splat (Vampire, Werewolf/Shifter, Changeling, Mage) gets only one type of magical powers. By this, I mean that Mages have Sphere magic, Changelings have Arts and Realms, etc. When in doubt, err on the side of the full splat (full game) rather than the supporting material.
- If your character has two support splats (Kinfolk, Kinain, Sorcerer/Psychic, Ghoul), you can use both aspects to gain magic/powers, within reason. Only two power types are allowed – for example, you cannot make a Kinfolk/Kinain Ghoul and get Arts/Realms, Gifts, and Disciplines.
- There are rare exceptions to this in the rules. Kitsune and Bastet, as well as one tribe of Garou, can learn Sorcery.
- Yes, this means I am not allowing Mage/Changeling/Shifter ghouls.
